Four BCD members spent the day in Half Moon Bay on Sunday March 26th.
Carol, Curt, Roy and Nick paddled their kayaks out through the Princeton
Harbor entrance and dropped a total of 5 crab traps.
We then returned
to shore and changed into our mussel gathering duds. We then drove to
the southern end of Half Moon Bay and gathered 30 pounds of mussels
at low tine below the new Ritz Carlton Hotel. We would have gathered
40 pounds but Nick went dancing instead. We spent the rest of the day
shopping in several of the close-out/bargain stores in town and a couple
of small shops on main street. We also had a nice picnic at the HMB
state beach and gathered quite a few wild mushrooms there as well. At
about 4pm we paddled our kayaks back out and retrieved our traps, we
all got crabs. Between the four of us we took a bucket full of dungeness
and rock crabs.
The paddle back in was rough going against am offshore wind, but
we finally made it. When we got back to the beach we noticed a bunch
of people digging for clams and getting some really nice big washington/horseneck
clams. We decided then and there that our next trip to HMB would include
digging for clams. We cleaned up, loaded the boats and all headed for
Nick's place in San Bruno. We cooked up the mussels and clams and had
a fest and spent the rest of the night enjoying each others company
and planning our next adventure.
