Club Dive Stillwater Cove, Sonoma
by Dan Schwartz
I got up to the campsite to find Nick kicking
back with a good read. Jean Lundeen (remember her)
was there too but had come out of the water
and was off to party with some friends at the Ocean Cove campground.
Nick and I were hoping Roy would show up, but he didn't, and we were
off to grab some dinner. We decided to head to Timber Cove. Vis was
about arms length. Not quite Braille diving, but pretty close. Both
of us saw these rather large white objects shoot past us from the darkness.
Nick actually had one on each side him during one of his plunges. These
were juvenile Harbor Seals. They'd pop up in front of my face, "Oh,
hello", with those puppy dog eyes and check me out inquisitively
or they even rubbed up against my leg when I was catching my breath.
I almost landed on one when I was kicking down and found him/her laying
on the floor. Of course one of them wanted to play "chase"
but - yeah, it ain't much of a chase. It would have been fun to have
my camaera, but I don't bring it free-diving.
We got our limit, and came back to the campsite.
Roy ws there and after a few we baked a couple of abs on the campfire,
when Curt and Carol showed up.
The next day we kayaked out of Stillwater Cove
and headed south a few coves to pick up more ab. Conditions were awesome.
We passed by California Sea Lions, and kayaked through washrocks. We
set up shop in front of glass house that was about midway between Stillwater
and Timber Cove. Roy, Nick and Jean set up shop on the outside of the
cove, while Curt and Carol worked close to shore. But again viz wasn't
much. And we had another Harbor Seal come play with us.
