SEAL DIVE AT STILLWATER COVE, CARMEL BAY

By Curt Haney

On Sunday 13 March 2005, Roy, Carol and my self made two dives at Stillwater Cove in Carmel Bay. The ocean was calm, the wind was slight and the sun came out to make it a great day of diving. We made both dives from the same spot, out in front of the rocky islands. Visibility ranged from 20 to 30 feet and there was a small surge in the shallows from the swell.

On the first dive we all shot fish for dinner. Carol got a nice Cabazone and other nice rock fish. Roy got a few rockfish, and I got some as well. I was also lucky enough to get a couple of Calico's, one of which weighed in at 4 pounds.

On the second dive Carol and I were lucky again. We had two harbor seals swim with us for the entire dive.

They were very playful and were right in our face at times. They followed us, nipping at our flippers and hoping for a free fish handout. At the end of the dive I dove and free swam with one of them for a few minutes near my kayak.

Overall it was a great couple of dives. I look forward to diving Stillwater Cove again in the near future, this time for big Lingcod and to hopefully see the seals again.

See you all underwater soon,
