News and Announcements

July has two Club Events that you don't want to miss!!

The first is a Halibut Dive on Sunday the 14th in the Monterey Area. Meet at Aquarius Dive Shop on Del Monte st. at 8:30. If you are running late, check with someone who has a cell phone. Dan's, Roy's and Pete's work in the area. Call Carol for cell phone numbers or e-mail Dan.

The 2nd event is on Sunday the 28th. This is a leisurely float down the mighty (until they dammed it) Lower Stanislaus River. Bring a hat, super-soakers, and plenty of sunblock (fog doesn't reach this area in the summer).

Call Carol for details, kayaks and canoes can be rented.

Monterey Harbor Clean-up moved toAugust 3rd.

Not wanting to conflict with Northern California Underwater Photographic Society's (NCUPS to y'all) Beach Photo competition, the Harbor Master has changed the date of the Clean Up to Sunday August 3rd. Meet at Wharf II (the working wharf) at 8:30, dive at 9:30. Grub and litter will be provided.

Go win a prize or two!

They want you to pre-register ( yeah, but who does?) by sending an e-mail to David Clayton at drc@astound.net.

Fishing Closure

The Dept of Fish and Game fu#$%ed up again and now there is a closure to recreational and commercial fishing of Bocaccio, Lingcod, ocean whitefish, and California scorpion fish (sculpin) in waters 20 fathoms or greater in depth (that's 120 ft. for you landlubbers) south of Cape Mendocino, Humboldt County.

What they are saying, is there is only 5% of the bocccacio population left, and it is a by-catch of the other aformentioned species since it lives at the same depth in the water column.

Expect additional measures for the recovery of the boccacio, canary and yelloweye rockfish species.

Call Ms. Marija Vojkovich at 805-568-1246 if you have any questions.(such as "Why the did you wait until there was only 5% of the species left before you got off your fud and did something?")

Great Annual Fish Count- through July

Throughout July , divers will survey fish for the Great Annual Fish Count. Reef Enviromental Education Foundation (REEF) with support from NOAA's National Marine Sanctuary Program is putting it on. This year will be an international event. First, divers are invited to free fish ID seminars to learn how to identify fish. Then, the object is to dive, look under ledges and elsewhere in the water column and count species and numbers of fishes. You catagorize by saying 1, few (2-10), many (11-100), and abundant (>100).

Wanna be in on it? Sure you do! Contact the website at:
